It was done. I was leaving for Mexico the next day. I’d already given my word to Ruth that I’d meet her at the resort there.

Yet, I couldn’t help but be conflicted about everything.

I texted Oliver and told him to meet me at the bar we usually hung out at. I needed to talk to someone.

Oliver was there before me and he’d even ordered drinks.

“Hey man!” He was cheerful when I walked up to him, but he saw the way I looked. “What’s up with you?”

I sat down across from him, reaching for the whiskey immediately.

“I’m leaving for Mexico tomorrow.”

“Oh yeah, I forgot about that. It’s this weekend? Wow. It sounds like it’ll be fun.”

I stared at Oliver who was smiling at me now. I was tempted to tell him about everything that’d happened with Gabby. Something stopped me from being honest with him. Even though I knew he wouldn’t give as much of a crap as Tate or Harris or even Everrett. Maybe because I knew it was wrong.

I shouldn’t have turned up at Gabby’s window last night. I shouldn’t have put her in a position where she had to make a choice. It had almost cost her the job.

“Yeah, I guess it could be fun. Ruth is an interesting woman,” I said.

“She’s fucking hot,” Oliver added.

I nodded. It wasn’t a lie.

“You don’t think she’s hot? What’s wrong with you, man? She’s not even that much older than us.”

“Yeah, she’s pretty hot. That’s not the point.”

“So, what’s going on then?”

My brother searched my eyes while I tried to avoid his gaze.

“I don’t know man, I’m just not feeling it.” I ran a hand through my hair. “I wish this damn deal wasn’t so important.”

Oliver’s brows were furrowed. The smile was gone. He watchedme closely.

“If you don’t want to go to Mexico and do this thing with her…whatever it is, then maybe you shouldn’t go.”

“Everett and Harris have made it very clear that I need to make it happen. The deal has to happen this weekend, and Ruth wants me there in Mexico to discuss it.”

“Then keep it all business,” Oliver suggested, naively.

I shook my head at him like he was stupid. He shrugged.

“If she makes a pass at me and I turn her down, what do you think is going to happen?” I asked.

He didn’t have to answer that question. It was obvious. I’d be a failure.

“So what are you going to do?” Oliver asked.

I threw my head back and drank every last drop of the whiskey in my glass.

“What do you think?”
